E.S.B Bavarian Lager
by BFG
@ 30, Apr 2007 |

Modified this to be a bigger malty
lager. Used 230g amber grain, 120g
medium crystal, and 500g dextrose along
with equal hallertau and saaz hops
adding 15 IBU's. Brewed with the W34/70
yeast at 11*C for two weeks. Came out at
around 6.5% abv. Smooth and malty with a
good balance of bittering. Very easy to
drink, with a nice dry finish from the
extra hops and alcohol. Suitably
impressed with this kit, will probably
try it again as the basis of a dark
lager.

E.S.B Extra Special Stout
by BFG

I have brewed this about four times over
the years, volume 18L with S-04 yeast,
and is excellent with Irish Ale liquid
yeast. Absolutely nothing wrong with
this kit, it is rich and roasty yet
smooth and has a great head. I've tried
other stout kits to compare and haven't
found any to match it.

E.S.B Bavarian Wheat

I've made this a few times as a german
hefe style, using both WLP300 and 380.
Turns out great with either. Last time I
brewed it using 250g steeped amber
grain, super alpha hops (adding 15 IBUs)
and used US-56 yeast at 18*C. This was
excellent, light but full bodied
(fluffy?), smooth and fruity with a dry
finish - perfect for February and as
good as the german hefe's. This is my
favourite ESB kit, and a good base for
experiments.

E.S.B Czech Pilsner

Made this per instructions, but with
10*C temperature. This is pretty good
flavour-wise, but the finish is not
bitter enough nor dry enough IMO to be a
good czech pils. I'm going to re-do
this kit with a czech liquid yeast
(WLP802) and 200g cara-pils, plus an
extra 10 IBUs of saaz bittering. Then I
think it will be a 4.5 score.
