Brewcraft English Bitter
by Bruce @ 05, May 2006

 4/5

This is a 1.8kg kit. I brewed it with 1kg dry pale malt, 150g maltodextrin and 150g crystal malt, 15g goldings for aroma. OG 1040 FG 1010 Volume 24l Yeast safale 56. Pleasantly surprised with this kit, it is well hopped, tasted fresh and produced a simple but very drinkable bitter with an indestructible head. However, my recipe did produce a strong caramel taste and aroma from the crystal (it did lessen with maturation). I will definitely brew this kit again, but will use a lighter crystal grain next time to lessen the caramel. The maltodextrin probably wasn’t needed.

E.S.B Irish Red Fresh Wort Kit
by Bruce @ 22, Mar 2006

 3/5

I had great expectations for this after reading the previous reviews. Followed instructions, cut added water to 4L, used supplied yeast Safale S004 (OG 1040 FG 1012), temp kept between 22-24. Final beer: medium bodied ale with good head that lasts, noticeable chocolate flavour. However, the finished beer was very fruity - probably due to type of yeast and high brewing temperatures. All other reviewers had used liquid yeast and where indicated brewed at 20 degrees or below . I would definitely use a more neutral yeast (perhaps the 56) if I do this brew again at temps greater than 20 degrees.

E.S.B. American Pale Ale Fresh Wort
by Bruce @ 17, Feb 2006

 5/5

Total 5L water added, OG 1040 FG 1010, extra 12g cascade boiled for 15 mins, 12g cascade at end steeped for 15 mins. Used supplied yeast (Safale 56), bottled day 8. After 6 weeks, the resulting beer was very good: A fresh tasting beer with excellent colour, OK head, moderate bitterness, and light hops flavour and aroma. Probably add more aroma hops next time

Coopers Original Lager
by Bruce @ 19, Dec 2005

 3/5

Used 500 dextrose, 250g LME, 250g maltodextrin, used supplied yeast fermented at 21C. Beer has a nice golden colour, with good head retention but lacked any hop flavour or aroma. Initially there was a very strong green apple aroma and flavour, which was gone after six weeks of maturation. A reasonable drink but it never seemed very fresh.
