Brewcraft Bavarian Wheat
by MiG5 @ 09, May 2007

 3/5

I banged out a couple of these without messing them up beyond uspecialising the beyond basic yeasts. The bavarian Wheat style wasn't something I was familiar with prior to chucking these together but definitely a good one. The tart of a wheat beer balanced with a good manly malt profile, not like those fruity cloudy hoegarden-type wheat beers. A great summer drop, crisp, clear, sharp and refreshing.

Black Rock NZ Company Bitter
by MiG5 @ 09, May 2007

 3/5

This isn't that bitter. It's good, but it's not a nasty bitter like I remember a bitter being. That said it's got a good body, a lush colour and a rich maltiness that I would expect. I've whacked two of these together. The first I did as a toucan with a basic draught. It surprised me with it's goodness. The second time I was more scientific; The can, a 1.5kg of liquid amber malt, a US56, a good dose of Saaz in the boil. Dry hopped with more saaz for 3 days. A good result, next time however I'll skip the dry hopping; definitely one to age probably best after 4 months.

Black Rock NZ Draught
by MiG5 @ 09, May 2007

 3/5

I whacked down a batch of this based on the previous review figuring it'd be a good easy drinker. I used the kit, a brewcraft draught converter, US56, some NZ Bullets in the boil to bitter and some hallertau for aroma at the end. It's better than an easy drinker, it's very drinkable. It's not heavily malty, a light golden, but definitely better than the gutless BlackRock EIPA. It held the hops well and i'll probably use it as a base for learning more about hopping. I'd also put it in front of my mates with limited tastes in different beer styles and no idea about homebrewing. It's that drinkable.

Cascade Imperial Voyage Pale Ale
by MiG5 @ 09, May 2007

 2/5

The first time I made this, the batch barely survived 2 months past bottling; mind you, it was summer. It was made with US56 Yeast, a handful of Saaz in the boil and a Fuggles teabag at the end. I rushed out and bought another. It's autumn and the second batch is now in a glass in front of me, a month old; pretty much when I cracked into the last lot. This batch is again the kit and a kilo of dextrose, however this time with 15g NZ Bullets for bittering and some Hallertau for aroma at the end. Also, this time I used S04 as the yeast. It's good and it's drinkable, maybe a bit thin. There's some caramel flavour going on, but it's subdued, overall the malt is pretty smooth, not too weighty, nothing outstanding. I don't think I'll be rushing out again.

Black Rock East India Pale Ale
by MiG5 @ 09, May 2007

 1/5

I've tried two different brews of this. The first was overly fruity, had no body and even less flavour. I put that first one down to possibly brewing too warm (though I had it under 20 all the way) and possibly the wrong adjunct (Brewcraft 15), with the second I set about adjusting the body with a stiffer brew booster (Brewcraft 20) and getting the yeast going right, I even gave it a good dose of bittering hops (NZ Bullets early, Saaz at the end). It is still lacking body and flavour and the fruitiness is still there. She's just not good. I'll be giving it to guests; but only the in-laws.
