Morgans Yukon Brown Smoked Ale
by Thommo
@ 01, Mar 2006 |

|
|
Tries this one on the recommendation
from the Local HBS guy as I was looking
for something different and he had heard
good things from other customers. I was
not impressed with this beer at first.
Thought it tasted really bad and
considered tipping it. (But I'm lazy so
I didn't. About six months later I gave
one to a mate to show him the worst beer
I had ever made and he loved it. After 6
months it was actually pretty good. If
you're going to make this kit then be
prepared to let it mature for a while.
Probably won't make again though.

Morgans Golden Sheaf Wheat Beer
by Thommo
@ 01, Mar 2006 |

|
|
Did this kit with the Specialty Blend
Wheat malt. Came out at only about 3.8%,
so if you're looking for more alcahol
then perhaps fill fermenter to 20 litres
or so instead of 23. Everyone I gave
this beer to praised me for it. The
first beer I made that really impressed
the nay sayers.

Morgans Australian Bitter
by Thommo

For a while this kit was my staple. Add
with Ultrabrew and 12gms of POR hops as
a flavour addition (weird, I know.) but
I loved it. Give it a go as a good base
for a bitter.

Black Rock Bock

Tried this wanting something different.
Bit dissapointed as it seemed a bit
light and tasteless. Some of my mates
absolutely loved it though. Just a dark
lager really. In all honesty, my
complaints are more with the style than
the kit. If your after something light
on taste yet dark in colour, give this
one a go. COuld definately be improved
with a few additions.

Wal's Blonde 1.7kg
by Thommo
@ 27, Feb 2006 |

|
|
Tried this recently as a base for a very
light APA. Added heaps of Cascade hops,
end result was a bit light on body, but
I did fill to 24-25 litres so that would
be my fault. Great colour however, and
would recommend all the Wals kits i have
tried. Not as full of hops as the bitter
or the Wheat, but they were definately
there.

Coopers Canadian Blonde

Exactly what I was looking for.
Something nice and light in color.
Can't give a description of the
standard kit, as I added some Saaz hops,
but the end result turned out awesome.
Definately recommend.

GENERIC - Homebrand Lager

Was pleasantly surprised by this kit.
Nothing special, but no where near as
bad as I thought it would be. In
hindsight if I used again I'd rack to
secondary, some of the hops were
floating around in the bottles. Yeast
did it's job, and the end result tasted
like beer. Be a good base for the more
frugal brewer to experiment with. Gonna
try a two can next and add some hops.

Coopers Stout
by Thommo
@ 27, Feb 2006 |

I'm a bit biased here, cause I find it
impossible to make a bad stout. The
coopers kit is a good introduction to
the style. Also good for a two can brew
if you're looking for something with
some body and bitterness.

Coopers Traditional Draught
by Thommo
@ 09, Jan 2006 |

Bought this kit with a view to attempt a
coopers Pale Ale clone. Added 1kg of
Ultrabrew and 12gm Cluster standard
method. Ended up at only 4%AVB but
tasted absolutely fantastic. When I took
my initial SG Reading and saw that it
was low I had a look at the can...they
recommend using 1.5kg of LME so I'll
try that next time, but I was pretty
impressed with the overall finished
product. Perhaps a bit light on the
body, but the 1.5kg LME next time should
fix that.

Wal's Wheat 1.7kg
by Thommo
@ 11, Dec 2005 |

|
|
This was the second Wal's kit I've
done (after the bitter.) I am really
impressed with the Wals kits so far.
Comes with a decent Wheat yeast, and
like all Wal's kits you could still see
the fresh hops in the can when you took
the lid off. Not sure how it would taste
if you just did a kit and kilo, as I
steeped some Carawheat and added some
Hallertau Hops to mine, but it turned
out pretty awesome.

Wal's Bitter 1.7kg

Thought I'd give this a go, and decided
to brew fairly standard just to gauge
the Country Brewer kits. Gave it a
fifteen minute boil and some Ultrabrew.
Nothing else. Tastes the way commercial
beers should taste. You can really
notice the POR hops, so it's not a kit
for those who have a snobby attitude to
Ringwood. Good quality kit, and I'd
recommend it if you're trying to simply
make an improvement on the commercial
brews in Oz.
