E.S.B Extra Special Nut Brown
by Timmmay @ 11, May 2005

 5/5

Made 2 batches, both using the yeast supplied (Safale S04) with nothing else except water added. The first batch made to 22.5l was very good but a little light on for body. The second batch however, at 21l, was spot on (FGs of 1012 and 1014 respectively). I must admit I’m not a big fan of this style of beer but people who tasted it that like brown ales thought it was fantastic. Therefore a 5/5. By the way, you are not meant to add a 1kg of malt or sugar to the ESB 3kg kits…

Coopers Australian Pale Ale
by Timmmay @ 11, May 2005

 3/5

I've made this beer a few ways … 1kg "brewing sugar" (don't do it - nasty homebrew taste from the 70% sucrose); 1kg brew enhancer 2 (not bad but a bit light on for taste); 750g dry light malt + 250g dextrose (better than BE2, quite drinkable but nothing outstanding); 1kg dry light malt (too sweet with an unpleasant, dull, soapy taste; hops flavour completely smothered by the malt). Similar in style to the commercial version but doesn’t have the complexity or depth of flavour.

E.S.B Australian Draught
by Timmmay @ 28, Apr 2005

 5/5

Made to 22 litres using WLP029 German Ale/Kolsch yeast. Temp 21-23C, 8 days primary fermentation. FG 1004. This beer is fantastic if you like Australian draught beers. Same style as a commercial Aussie draught but was considerably better when I did a side by side comparison with Crown Lager and Carlton Draught. More depth, fullness of flavour and complexity, little bit more malt and more hops (both bitterness and aromatic) than the commercial equivalents. Highly recommended.

E.S.B Extra Special Stout
by Timmmay @ 23, Mar 2005

 5/5

Brewed according to instructions - made to 18l, used the dried safale yeast supplied, fermented at around 23-25c. An excellent full bodied stout, complex smooth malty taste with a nice bitter finish. Good head retention. The best stout I've made from a kit - far superior to the Coopers stout which I find a bit rough in comparison. Definitely 5 stars from me.
