Bavarian Wheat
by BFG

I've made this a few times as a german
hefe style, using both WLP300 and 380.
Turns out great with either. Last time I
brewed it using 250g steeped amber
grain, super alpha hops (adding 15 IBUs)
and used US-56 yeast at 18*C. This was
excellent, light but full bodied
(fluffy?), smooth and fruity with a dry
finish - perfect for February and as
good as the german hefe's. This is my
favourite ESB kit, and a good base for
experiments.

Another regular kit for me, last one was
boozified - extra light dry malt,
500gms, coopers 2 (? much), WLP838 Lager
yeast. CC and dry hopped with
Hallertau.
.
Primary ferment for about 3 weeks at
14c, secondary for 4 weeks, CC for 5
weeks on the Hallertau.
.
Got some nice comments for this one over
at AHB.

no special techniques used, just kept
temp as close to 20 - 25 as possible
used yeast supplied
no extra dextrose added, just use the
tin supplied, worth paying the extra
money. given a 5 for the value for money

Bavarian Wheat

Good Kit.
made to 22L using the supplied Safale
K-97 @ 18-20degC.
6 days in primary, 6 in secondary and 8
days in CC. from memory OG=1.043 and
FG=1.010
Bits added to the kit included 200g of
wheat DME, 25g fresh crushed coriander
seeds and 100g of honey.
4 weeks in the bottle = refreshing
weizen if a little tart!
6 weeks in bottle and the tartness is
subsiding which is helping.
All in all a great kit and i'll do it
again.

.../continued
Has anyone else had the above
mega-cloudiness problems? If so what
can-you-do/have-you-done to address.
(Both brews ~14 days ferment at 22-24
degrees C wort temp F.G 1.008)

An Excellent Hefe Quaffer (I/II)

Have made this a couple of times, it
makes an excellent quaffer.
Essentially the extract has got the
right base flavours and the K97 dried
SAFWheat yeast does a good job and
providing a hint of banana and cloves.
Looking forward to trying this kit with
a liquid yeast.
My only complaint is that the yeast
seems to be ultra low floc, both times
when I bottled the first 2 litres of
fermented beer was mega hazy (like about
10x the "cloudiness" you would
expect).

Good Easy Wheat

This was the second brew I'd laid down,
and was very happy with it. I find the
3kg ESB's really easy and always
quality plus. This was pitched with the
supplied yeast (can't recall what it
was) and fermented at low to mid 20's
for about 14 days. My only criticism was
that it had a little bit of residual
sweetness. A liquid hefeweizen yeast and
cooler temp would probably lift it one
more star.

Good Drop

A great kit. Made the kit as is without
any adjuncts/mods. Used the dry yeast
supplied with the kit. No complaints.
Will maybe use a liquid yeast next time
and see if this improves the results
even more.
Well worth it!!!!

A quality wheat beer

ESB make well balanced kits with quality
ingredients, IMO. I added 21L to the
Bavarian Wheat 3kg kit and pitched the
Wyeast 3068 liquid yeast and it produced
a quality hefeweizen. The only concern
might have been the darker colour from
the extract, and some extra hop flavour
might have been nice. Otherwise, a top
drop!
