Black Rock NZ Company Bitter

Post New Review

Not bad as a dark
by JamesCraig @ 19, Nov 2007

 3/5

Made this up as an old-style dark beer. Used the tin, 1kg Dark DME and Safale yeast. Let the lot ferment at 18-20C for about 10 days and bottled. OK after a week in the bottle, not brilliant, after a month its turning into fairly passable malty, dark beer which is what I was aiming for. Im going to try to save some for winter, but dont think it'll last that long.

Bitter, like that lesbian cousin you avoid at Xmas

This isn't that bitter. It's good, but it's not a nasty bitter like I remember a bitter being. That said it's got a good body, a lush colour and a rich maltiness that I would expect. I've whacked two of these together. The first I did as a toucan with a basic draught. It surprised me with it's goodness. The second time I was more scientific; The can, a 1.5kg of liquid amber malt, a US56, a good dose of Saaz in the boil. Dry hopped with more saaz for 3 days. A good result, next time however I'll skip the dry hopping; definitely one to age probably best after 4 months.
