Morgans Yukon Brown Smoked Ale

Post New Review

simliar to bamberg
by apple @ 30, Jun 2007

 4/5

This concentrate is very similar in flavour to the german smoked beers of bamberg. Needs three months. Best not to overhop it either. Good choice for something different.

Hmmm

Made with 1kg lme, 250g dex, 250g maltodextrin and kit yeast. Nice smokey flavour but not much after that. It could benefit from some dark malts or something. I can only drink 1 bottle in a sitting.

Needs Time

Tries this one on the recommendation from the Local HBS guy as I was looking for something different and he had heard good things from other customers. I was not impressed with this beer at first. Thought it tasted really bad and considered tipping it. (But I'm lazy so I didn't. About six months later I gave one to a mate to show him the worst beer I had ever made and he loved it. After 6 months it was actually pretty good. If you're going to make this kit then be prepared to let it mature for a while. Probably won't make again though.

Try Again, Morgan's

I did a double-can batch of this stuff, hoping for super-beer. What I got was ridiculously malty, but managed to be totally thin in the mouth. All traces of smokiness were wiped by the malt. Perhaps brewing accoding to the instructions would improve this one, but I won't try it again. Only batch of homebrew I've ever pitched out, thinking, "I'm just never ever gonna drink this"

An acquired taste

I made this up as the kit I wanted was out of stock when I went to the hbs so I thought I'd give it a go. Made with 1kg light malt and the kit yeast and 24gm goldings dry hopped. It has a distinct smoked aroma and flavour (my mates call it "bacon beer") and although I don't really like it and probably won't make it again. One of my friends reckons it is one of my best and loves it. (at least that means he can get through it and leave more of the homebrews I like for me:)
